Fractions post.

I wanted to share a few things that have helped me with teaching fractions around my house. I've used the AWESOME fraction cubes for 2 straight kids now. Love 'em. I got them at a local teacher supply store and I highly recommend them. (I hold up 8/12 next to 2/3 and they get it....it's the SAME)

I also used the white board almost daily in my homeschool. I use it for EVERYthing. (just ask my kids. I'm neurotic about this ONE certain EXPO pen...don't anyone touch it) When I've used it for math I've done pictures to explain simplifying. (for my 5th grader this morning)

I've also printed off extra practice from themathworksheetsite.com. That site is majorly cheap....like a few bucks....so, it's worth it. I just would buy a monthly subscription and print off zillions of practice sheets on fractions. I used it 2 years ago when my now 6th grade son would cry that he would 'never learn this stuff!' (he did...the drama king)

So, now....fractions don't scare me. BRING ON ALGEBRA.

Thanks for the recommendation! I have to be careful about teacher supply stores, homeschool stores, bookstores and hobby lobby... Especially if I'm on a financial diet. It is SO easy to buy lots of cool things... the hard part is actually USING them and fitting it into our crazy days.

I forgot I had those fraction blocks - thanks for the reminder. I'm in the midst of fractions with my middle son and they might help him. I love the free sheets on themathworksheetsite.com though I've been too cheap to subscribe. That's a good idea to just get a month's sub. and print out a bunch of sheets for drill work. Good for you to "get" math - your kids are fortunate. I'm glad my dh is math-minded, I really need him at times!

I desperately need something to help us with converting fractions, decimals, and percentages back and forth. Any ideas? I love those blocks. I'm going to look for them!

Sheeeesh! I didn't know 8/12 and 2/3 were the same.....you could call me mathematically challenged and it wouldn't even hurt my feelings a bit!

Do those cubes come with directions on how to use them?

And we're doing Saxon math for Russell, Hannah and Samantha, with the DIVE CDs for Russell and Hannah.....when I asked Dave why they didn't have a DIVE CD for Samantha (3rd grade) he said "gee honey, maybe they know that this level of math is soo EASY that everyone already knows how to do it all!" and I'm like, "hey, that leaves me out!" because I am such a totally blank-brain when it comes to math! So maybe Saxon will not only help the kids, but maybe I'll larn me a thing or two, ya think??? Der, I sure hope so!!!!

I'll look into that math worksheet website!

Can I bring my 6 kids (and myself) over for math...it is our least favorite subject. You and your dry board might just do the trick, if your printing out papers, lets see...one preK, 2 in K, one 3/4rth, one 7/8th and one 11th grader. Yes, I have taught it since the beginning (no not of time, though sometimes it feels like it)...still not loving it. (and I did take it in college and had the highest score in the class)
